4H Legacy

The 4-H Youth Programs have a rich history dating back to 1902 when they were established nationally. In December 1917, Santa Cruz County established its own 4-H Youth Program. This program was a natural fit with the University of California Cooperative Extension, which owned and operated the property known as 4-H Camp at the time. This partnership between the UC Cooperative Extension and the camp helped fulfill the 4-H Youth Development Program's public purpose in local communities.

Over time, the Santa Cruz County 4-H Youth Development Program developed a strong association with Camp Loma. In 1958, the Santa Cruz County 4-H Clubs, Incorporated was formalized to establish a non-profit corporation to organize, maintain and support the 4-H Camp. Later, in 1986, the non-profit organization changed its name to Santa Cruz County Youth Activities, Incorporated.

In the 1970s, the University of California divested itself from properties under its ownership and responsibility. Fortunately, Santa Cruz County Farm Advisor John W. Melendy (1946-1976) foresaw the importance of the 4-H Camp's purpose and acted to ensure its continuation. He deeded the property to Santa Cruz County Youth Activities, Incorporated, which continues to operate and maintain Camp Loma today.

The Santa Cruz County 4-H Youth Development Program has a longstanding partnership with Camp Loma. The camp's history and purpose are intrinsically linked to the 4-H Youth Development Program's mission to foster leadership, citizenship, and life skills in youth. Thanks to the dedication of Santa Cruz County Youth Activities, Incorporated, Camp Loma's legacy and impact on youth development will continue to thrive.
